She had the honour to represent Canada for two consecutive years at the Festival du Shamanism in France. She also taught the Four Directions Dance at the Healing and Tradition Dances Meeting. The Theravada tradition\, one of the oldest schools of Buddhism\, dates back over 2\,500 years to the teachings of Gautama Buddha in what is now Nepal and India. Predominant in countries like Sri Lanka\, Thailand and Myanmar\, Theravada’s approach outlines a methodical path to enlightenment. \nSeven Stages of Purification (saththa visuddhi) in Theravada Buddhism\n \n\nPurification of conduct (sila-visuddhi)\nPurification of mind (citta-visuddhi)\nPurification of view (ditthi-visuddhi)\nPurification by overcoming doubt (kankha-vitarana-visuddhi)\nPurification by knowledge and vision of what is path and not-path (maggamagga-nanadassana-visuddhi)\nPurification by knowledge and vision of the course of practice (patipada–nanadassana-visuddhi)\nPurification by knowledge and vision (nanadassana-visuddhi)\n\nThe seven stages of purification are described in the Discourse on the Relay of Chariots (ratha-vinitha sutta ) of the Majjhima Nikaya (collection of the Buddha’s middle length discourses). It is based on a dhamma discussion between the Venerable Sariputta\, one of the Buddha’s two chief disciples and Venerable Punna Mantani-putta. In this sutta\, \nSimilarly\, in the case of the seven stages of purification\, none of the seven stages singularly can lead to the attainment of Nibbana. Each stage of purification constitutes the basis for the subsequent stage until the final stage of purification by knowledge and vision which constitutes the basis for the attainment of Nibbana. This sequential process can be described as follows; \n\nPurification of conduct is for the sake of attaining purification of mind\nPurification of mind is for the sake of attaining purification of view\nPurification of view is for the sake of attaining purification by overcoming doubt\nPurification by overcoming doubt is for the sake of attaining purification by knowledge and vision of what is path and not-path\nPurification by knowledge and vision of what is path and not-path is for the sake of attaining purification by knowledge and vision of the course of practice\nPurification by knowledge and vision of the course of the practice is for the sake of attaining purification by knowledge and vision\nPurification by knowledge and vision is for the sake of attaining Nibbana without clinging\n\nThe Pali Canon is the complete scripture collection of the Theravada school. As such\, it is the only set of scriptures preserved in the language of its composition. It is called the Tipitaka or “Three Baskets” because it includes the Vinaya Pitaka or “Basket of Discipline\,” the Sutta Pitaka or “Basket of Discourses\,” and the Abhidhamma Pitaka or “Basket of Higher Teachings”. The Tipitaka is considered to be the authoritative source of Theravada Buddhism\, which is the oldest surviving form of Buddhism. It is also one of the most complete records of the teachings and practices of early Buddhism. The teachings contained in the Tipiṭaka are also known as the Doctrine of the Elders [Theravāda]. Some of the monks who had heard the Buddha preach in person were Arahants\, and so by definition\, ‘pure ones’ free from passion\, ill-will and delusion and therefore\, were capable of retaining the Buddha’s words. Even those devoted monks who had not yet attained Arahantahood but had reached the first three stages of sainthood and had retentive memories could also call to mind word for word what the Buddha said. One such monk was Ānanda\, the chosen attendant and constant companion of the Buddha during the last twenty-five years of his life. Ānanda was highly intelligent and gifted with the ability to remember whatever he had heard. Indeed\, it was his express wish that the Buddha always relate all of his discourses to him and although he was not yet an Arahanta he committed to memory word for word all the Buddha’s sermons. \nTeacher\nAbbott Bhante Sagara Dhamma\, The Guiding Light of Rajakiya Boudha Bihar \nBhante Sagara Dhamma\, also known as Dharma Bikram Shah\, is the revered Chief Abbot of Rajakiya Boudha Vihar\, located in the sacred gardens of Lumbini. Maitreya’s arrival is a symbol of hope\, compassion\, and a renewed spiritual awakening for humanity. The prophecy of Maitreya’s advent can be found in multiple sutras. These texts describe that he will be born in a prosperous city\, and during his lifetime\, he will achieve enlightenment under the Nāga tree. The focus in Theravada is on the cycle of Buddhas who appear to renew the dharma. In the Buddhist cosmology\, Maitreya currently resides in Tushita Heaven\, a celestial realm of preparation for the final rebirth. According to traditional teachings\, Maitreya has been waiting there\, observing the world\, and preparing for his future role as the next Buddha. Maitreya is frequently depicted in a seated posture known as the Western seated posture\, with his feet planted firmly on the ground rather than crossed in the lotus position. This represents his readiness to descend from Tushita Heaven to Earth. Maitreya embodies Metta\, or loving-kindness\, a central tenet in Buddhist practice. \nThe Pali Canon is the complete scripture collection of the Theravada school. As such\, it is the only set of scriptures preserved in the language of its composition. It is called the Tipitaka or “Three Baskets” because it includes the Vinaya Pitaka or “Basket of Discipline\,” the Sutta Pitaka or “Basket of Discourses\,” and the Abhidhamma Pitaka or “Basket of Higher Teachings”. The Tipitaka is considered to be the authoritative source of Theravada Buddhism\, which is the oldest surviving form of Buddhism. It is also one of the most complete records of the teachings and practices of early Buddhism. The teachings contained in the Tipiṭaka are also known as the Doctrine of the Elders [Theravāda]. Some of the monks who had heard the Buddha preach in person were Arahants\, and so by definition\, ‘pure ones’ free from passion\, ill-will and delusion and therefore\, were capable of retaining the Buddha’s words. Even those devoted monks who had not yet attained Arahantahood but had reached the first three stages of sainthood and had retentive memories could also call to mind word for word what the Buddha said. One such monk was Ānanda\, the chosen attendant and constant companion of the Buddha during the last twenty-five years of his life. Ānanda was highly intelligent and gifted with the ability to remember whatever he had heard. As a flame can pass from one candle to another\, so too can truth be passed. Fire is an icon for enlightenment. Although fire is considered a very yang element in Chinese symbolism\, it can exist in either a yang or a yin state because in Taoism all things have both a yin and a yang expression to create balance. The warmth of the fire symbolized the fire of life\, vitality in the material world\, coming from all the forces of the cosmos. Fire\, in scriptures\, communicates the very presence of God. This is especially evident in the burning bush from which God spoke to Moses\, described in the Old Testament and Koran. In the New Testament Paul describes the second coming of Christ as “in blazing fire”. In the Vedic scriptures\, Agni\, or Fire\, is the messenger between the people and their Gods. Agni purifies all that he consumes. In Hinduism\, fire is one of five sacred elements of which all living creatures are comprised and is considered an eternal witness essential to sacred religious ceremonies. In Christianity\, fire is a symbol of the Holy Spirit. In the Zoroastrian religion\, fire is used to represent Ahura Mazda\, or God of the Zoroastrians. Fire is universally associated with the sun and light. In Buddha’s teachings\, light is the symbol of truth that dispels the darkness of ignorance. As a flame can pass from one candle to another\, so too can truth be passed. Fire is an icon for enlightenment. Although fire is considered a very yang element in Chinese symbolism\, it can exist in either a yang or a yin state because in Taoism all things have both a yin and a yang expression to create balance. Fire symbolism is related to the sun and the powers of transformation and purification. In our Fire Element meditation\, we’ll became more receptive to the solar energies and establish a unity between the self and the Sun and distribute its power throughout the body. The Sun is an ever-present source of energy without which there would be no life on earth. We’ll meditate on the effects of solar rays within our body. We’ll accumulated solar forces in our solar plexus\, and send them to all parts of our body. In this way\, certain health conditions maybe placed in balance. Fire produces flame (light) and heat\, two very useful properties in the natural world. We feed the body by taking in the Sun’s energy embodied in plants. We warm ourselves in the rays of the Sun.
